In a country where soccer and badminton have the eyes of almost everyone, basketball is among one struggling sport that is still looking for a way to establish itself on the Indonesian sporting scene.
From such a bleak situation, passionate basketballer Vamiga Michel of Jakarta-based Satria Muda Pertamina looked beyond the sport to keep him on the court.
“I come from a family that is not really familiar with sport,” Vamiga shared with journalists, who visited the club’s home at BritAma Arena in North Jakarta on Tuesday as part of a Women in News and Sports (WINS) workshop.
“So when I decided to take up basketball after I graduated from senior high school, I faced strong rejections from my father and my extended family, especially my grandfather,” added the 24-year-old swingman, who has been playing for Satria Muda for six years.
